Happy New Year 2021 and welcome to WEEK SIX of the throw-back to my last album (“All Roads Lead Somewhere”). As you are likely aware of by now, each week I am presenting one of the current lyric sheets to the songs, one track at a time. Next up are the lyrics to track six titled “Waiting Games”.
waiting games.
Verse 1
I have these things to say, but my timing's always wrong.
And I don't know the roads I'll go - but I can put them in a song.
Put them in a song...
Chorus
Well it's a little too little... or it's a little too late.
Why all these games we play... with the wheel of fate?
What's meant to be... will usually be.
So, grab a long drink with me... and we'll wait and see.
Verse 2
So, when the chips are thrown down, will you still be around?
Or are you one that will run away... even though I'd ask you to stay.
Oh, please just stay...
Chorus
Well it's a little too little... or it's a little too late.
Why all these games we play... with the wheel of fate?
What's meant to be... will usually be.
So, grab a long drink with me... and we'll wait and see.
Bridge
Well life - it's a strange thing. No one can tell you how it will turn out.
And if not today or tomorrow - someday - you'll know what I'm talking about.
Chorus
Well it's a little too little... or it's a little too late.
Why all these games we play... with the wheel of fate?
What's meant to be... will usually be.
So, grab a long drink with me... and we'll wait and see.
Ending
Because the times - they are changing... one day is here and then it's gone.
Who knows the way this will all turn out, so all we can do is go on…
What does that mean?
This is one of those songs I more or less dreamed via my subconscious, because I woke up in the middle of the night and scribbled down all the lyrics in one sitting. That’s not the first time that has occurred for me, nor the last. It is a song written in the spirit of the triumphs and frustrations in life of timing. UGH, TIMING. Yes, one of the many grand mysteries we all experience and must sometimes endure.
As a concept that plays a prevalent role in everyone’s life, timing sometimes makes no sense at all and at other times, it’s downright cruel. Timing may often feel just a bit off, but perhaps it’s exactly what it was intended to be. If you’re looking for the answers, you’re not going to find them from me. I'm still searching for those answers too.
At times it feels like all we do is play this grand game of “wait and see”, but it’s really all that we can do. This is why throughout the song I reiterate the tactic of grabbing a long drink with whomever you’re on this journey of life with as we all simultaneously are stuck in our individual circumstances of “wait and see”.
I don’t always have the best patience, but it’s something I’ve been working on my entire life and I think I’ve made some decent progress. However, I still have a long ways to go. But don’t we all? As humans, we want what we want, and we want it right now. That attitude is increasingly common in our modern society.
That’s not entirely a bad thing because it can create a sense of urgency and keep us moving forward. But something I’ve learned is that trying to force things in life (aka when I reference playing games with the wheel of fate, which is in my Chorus) doesn’t tend to end well... Therefore, what’s meant to be will (not always, but usually) be.
Oh yes, the times are always changing. Some people and situations we think we will always be around are only meant for seasons. At times this is by intention, but other times it is due to circumstance. The trick is identifying and differentiating between the cameos and the recurring roles of all the various people we cross paths with from one day to the next. That differentiation is not always evident, but it usually becomes clear, at least eventually.
Even so, we can’t freeze-frame life, so our days continue to spin dizzyingly on, because “one day is here and then it’s gone”. Its ever-changing nature does keep things interesting, at least. We are continually faced with the challenge of choosing alternate paths and hoping whatever we decide isn't "a little too little or a little too late." Not one of us can really know how any of our stories will turn out, so all we can do is keep moving along until we find out.
Until next time,
Crystal
